Cloud Passports

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is considering “cloud” passports, which she assures us would be “grounded in absolute security”.

It’s a great idea – I thought I‘d lost my passport overseas recently, so it would be very beneficial to remove the need to carry a physical passport. Methinks, however, that chipping us like dogs and cats might be more secure unless we can overcome the risk of hacking! Remember some of these:

Will the appropriate risk assessment for the passport cloud strategy be undertaken and published, given this is our key, high risk personal identity information at stake? Will the risk assessment follow the Commonwealth’s own guidelines (see https://www.protectivesecurity.gov.au/informationsecurity/Documents/AustralianGovernmentInformationSecurityManagementGuidelines.pdf) including the need to:

  • identify its level of risk tolerance

  • identify specific risks to its people, information and assets, and

  • identify appropriate protections to mitigate identified risks?
